Two-year-old AI-first law firm Crosby has bid to acquire assets from Weil, Gotshal & Manges, the white-shoe Wall Street firm preparing for dissolution. Crosby seeks to buy Weil Gotshal's trademark, brand, and internal data, while also recruiting some of the firm's 1,200 lawyers. The Information first reported the offer.

Weil Gotshal confirmed to the New York Times this week it will vote on dissolution after its presumed leadership heir turned down the role, top-producing lawyers departed, and a planned merger with Willkie Farr & Gallagher fell through.

Crosby operates as an actual law firm using proprietary AI to deliver legal services at what it claims is unprecedented speed. Unlike competitors Harvey or Legora that sell AI technology to existing firms, Crosby built its own practice around the technology.

The startup has raised $85 million total. A $60 million Series B in March was led by Lux and Index, with participation from seed-lead Sequoia, Elad Gil, 01 Advisors, and Bain Capital Ventures. Crosby emerged from stealth in 2025 with $5.8 million in seed funding.

Terms of Crosby's bid were not disclosed, and the firm faces no guarantee of success. If the acquisition proceeds, Weil Gotshal's legacy could be revived under AI-first ownership.
