Google enabled users to generate, preview, and edit PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files, and code directly within Gemini. The feature rolls out today to all Gemini users. PDF previews and editing work on both web and mobile, while other file formats are available only on the web for now.
Users can expand documents to edit them in full-screen mode and highlight text in files to ask Gemini questions or request changes. Google says users can highlight a table and ask Gemini to convert it into a graph. Google added file generation and download support in Gemini earlier this year. The new capability lets users edit files without leaving the Gemini app.
Gemini already offered file editing through integrations in Google Workspace apps like the Gemini bar in Google Docs. Anthropic released a similar feature earlier this year allowing users to generate and edit documents and presentations in Claude chats.
