Meta's AI agent Muse is hitting adoption milestones faster than OpenAI's ChatGPT managed in its early mobile phase, according to download and usage data from analytics firm Appfigures. The Meta product is outpacing ChatGPT's initial North American performance across both total downloads and daily active users in the U.S. and Canada markets.
The comparison matters because mobile traction early on often predicts long-term consumer AI adoption. ChatGPT became a cultural phenomenon after its November 2022 launch, but its mobile app arrived later. By tracking how Muse performs against ChatGPT's same-period metrics, the data offers a real-time read on whether Meta can compete with OpenAI in consumer AI applications beyond enterprise and research settings.
Muse entered the market with Meta's existing distribution advantage. The company's installed base of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp users gave the AI agent built-in reach that ChatGPT lacked. ChatGPT had to acquire users cold through the web first before launching a dedicated iOS app in May 2023, then Android support months later. Meta, by contrast, can prompt users directly within its ecosystem.
The download velocity also reflects changing consumer behavior around AI. When ChatGPT launched its mobile app, the novelty of AI assistants was still relatively new to mainstream users. Now, 18 months later, consumers view AI tools as utilities rather than experiments. They download and use them more readily. Muse benefits from that normalized mindset.
OpenAI's ChatGPT still commands dominant market share and usage time in the general-purpose AI assistant category globally. Its subscription tier, ChatGPT Plus, generates recurring revenue that most free mobile apps cannot. But the metric that Appfigures surfaced reveals something specific: when measured purely on mobile consumer adoption velocity in North America, Muse's launch trajectory is steeper.
Meta has been aggressive in pushing Muse as a multimodal AI agent capable of text, image generation, and reasoning tasks. The company integrated Muse into Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, embedding it directly into the products billions of users already open daily. This distribution strategy bypasses the cold-start problem that ChatGPT faced. Users do not need to download a separate app or remember to visit a website. They encounter Muse within apps they already use.
The race for consumer AI adoption matters because whoever controls the primary interface owns the data collection advantage and can steer users toward additional services. Meta needs consumer wins in AI to justify its massive infrastructure investments and to compete with OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft. OpenAI, meanwhile, is not threatened by one metric but rather by the pattern of which company wins the most engaged, longest-duration user relationships.
Neither company has announced detailed monetization plans for their free consumer AI products yet. ChatGPT remains the industry standard, but mobile download speed is just one dimension of competitive strength. Retention, daily usage frequency, and revenue-per-user will determine winners over the next 18 months.
