Google is backing enhanced geothermal energy with a major power purchase agreement. The company will buy 400 megawatts from Fervo Energy, a startup focused on next-generation geothermal technology, with potential to expand to 1 gigawatt total. The deal targets a data center site in Utah.

This contract represents one of the largest renewable energy commitments Google has made to a single geothermal provider. It signals real commercial momentum for enhanced geothermal systems, or EGS, a technology that has long promised to deliver reliable baseload power but struggled to reach commercial scale.

Fervo Energy specializes in EGS, which uses hydraulic fracturing techniques borrowed from oil and gas to create artificial reservoirs in hot rock formations. Unlike conventional geothermal, EGS doesn't require proximity to natural hydrothermal systems, opening deployment possibilities across broader geography. The company raised $140 million in Series B funding in 2023, backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, and others.

Google's commitment addresses a critical infrastructure gap. The company operates massive data centers powering AI services, and these facilities consume enormous amounts of electricity. Data centers typically run 24/7, making intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind insufficient alone. Google has been acquiring long-term power purchase agreements across multiple technologies to stabilize energy costs and meet climate commitments, but geothermal provides what solar and wind cannot: steady, dispatchable power generation.

The Utah project could become a proof point for geothermal's viability at commercial scale. A 1-gigawatt facility would rank among the largest geothermal plants globally. If Fervo executes at this scale, other tech companies and data center operators will likely follow, creating meaningful demand for EGS technology.

Fervo competes in a crowded space. Commonwealth Fusion Systems, backed by major venture capital and focused on fusion energy, has drawn investor enthusiasm. Other geothermal startups like Eavor and U.S. Geothermal compete for attention and capital. However, geothermal offers something fusion does not: commercial viability today. Fervo's contract with Google translates ambition into contracted revenue.

The deal also reflects Google's broader energy strategy. The company has announced power purchase agreements with renewable developers across wind, solar, and now enhanced geothermal. This diversified approach hedges bets across technologies while meeting mounting electricity demand from AI infrastructure expansion.

Challenges remain. EGS projects require significant upfront capital and face geological risks specific to each site. Regulatory approval for the Utah project will determine timeline and feasibility. Fervo must execute flawlessly to deliver the promised capacity and costs. Any delays or cost overruns could dampen investor enthusiasm for the broader EGS sector.

Still, Google's vote of confidence carries weight in Silicon Valley and beyond. For Fervo, this agreement validates years of development and positions the company as a lead player in the geothermal renaissance. For the energy sector, it proves that tech companies will pay for reliable clean power, even at premium rates. That's the incentive structure geothermal needs to scale.
