The consensus among venture capitalists has solidified into something comfortable: artificial intelligence needs a body. Robots. Hardware. Embodied systems. The thinking goes that large language models have hit a plateau of utility, so the next trillion-dollar wave must be machines that can actually manipulate the physical world.
This narrative is seductive. It's also missing the point entirely.
Don't misunderstand. Physical AI will probably be important. Companies are raising enormous sums to build it. The engineering problems are genuinely hard and worth solving. But the obsession with this particular next frontier reveals what the venture world has always struggled with: the tendency to mistake "this is technically possible" for "this is where the real disruption happens."
The better question isn't whether physical robots will matter. It's what this flood of capital into embodied systems reveals about where we're NOT looking, and what gets broken when an entire investment class becomes convinced a particular technology is the inevitable future.
Here's the pattern we've seen before. When everyone agrees on what's next, capital floods in, valuations disconnect from reality, and the truly disruptive shifts happen in the margins nobody's paying attention to. We saw it with blockchain when the smart money was convinced decentralized everything was inevitable. We saw it with metaverse infrastructure. The consensus was so confident it suffocated actual innovation.
Physical AI carries the same risk. Yes, there are real applications. Warehouse automation. Surgery. Dangerous environment work. These are valuable problems. But the venture thesis seems to assume that once robots become competent, they become ubiquitous in the same way smartphones did. That's a much bigger assumption than the engineering roadmap suggests.
Here's what concerns me more: the opportunity cost. While billions flow toward humanoid robots and robotic arms, what gets starved? What problems become less attractive to solve because they're not part of the consensus narrative?
Consider what's happening in enterprise software right now. Companies are drowning in data they can't access or act on. The actual bottleneck in most organizations isn't labor on the factory floor; it's decision-making speed and information flow. A company that solved the data accessibility problem across industries would be monumentally valuable. But it's not exciting. It doesn't require funding rounds that turn founders into billionaires on paper. So it gets incrementally improved rather than fundamentally rethought.
The same applies to infrastructure. The power and cooling requirements for current AI systems are becoming a genuine constraint. Solving that problem doesn't require robots. It requires sustained, boring engineering investment. Yet the venture world has moved on to the next shiny thing.
Then there's the regulatory angle that nobody seems particularly concerned about. Physical robots operating in human spaces raise liability questions that blockchain and large language models never quite had to confront. When a robot fails in a warehouse, someone might get hurt. When a robot handles medication or food, regulatory frameworks become critical. This won't stop the technology, but it will slow deployment in ways that investment timelines don't account for.
The real disruption in the next five years probably won't come from the thing everyone is betting on. It will come from the angles that seem obvious once they happen but are invisible now because they lack the venture narrative momentum.
That's not an argument against physical AI. It's an argument for skepticism about consensus. It's a reminder that when an entire asset class agrees on where the future is, they've usually stopped looking at where it actually goes.
The question worth asking isn't whether robots will work. It's what we're not funding because we're all staring at the same shiny thing.
